Our Story
About Bréifne Gael Brewing Company
Bréifne Gael Brewing Company was founded with a simple goal — to brew great beer that celebrates who we are and where we’re from. Based in the heart of County Cavan, we’re bringing small-batch, handcrafted brewing back to its roots, creating beers with real character, balance, and a sense of place.
Founder Derek McKenna started like many brewers do, experimenting in his garage, and he has spent the past 10 years chasing the perfect pint, and learning the craft one brew at a time. That passion evolved into a purpose: to build a brewery that reflects the spirit of Cavan and the wider Bréifne region. His award-winning Or Dubh stout, which earned gold at the Irish National Homebrew Championship, set the standard for what Bréifne Gael is all about — quality, tradition, and authenticity in every glass.
Every beer we brew is made in small batches on our 200L system, ensuring complete control over quality and flavour. We keep things local wherever possible, working with nearby producers and suppliers to build genuine connections and support the community around us.
Our beers are inspired by the land and stories of Bréifne — a region known for its strength, heritage, and independent spirit. That same spirit drives everything we do at Bréifne Gael Brewing Company. We’re not here to follow trends; we’re here to make honest, distinctive Irish beer that speaks for itself.
